Extension offers 'Money Talk: A Financial Course for Women'

  At some point in many women’s lives, they will have to make major financial decisions. Money Talk, an online class offered through Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, gives women the knowledge to make those decisions and improve their lives. Money Talk helps women become better informed money managers and take charge of their financial future.

Iowa State Fair Campgrounds Open April 14 for Summer Fun

  Warmer weather is here and, with Memorial Day around the corner, now is the perfect time to plan a worry-free weekend in the great outdoors. The Iowa State Fair Campgrounds has plenty of space available beginning April 14 through mid-July with country comforts alongside big city style and excitement. The Campgrounds houses more than 1800 sites fully equipped with water and electrical hookups, 600 sites with sewers, and three large bathhouses outfitted with clean showers, toilets and sinks.

Deadline to Apply for Robert D. Blue Scholarship Draws Near

  State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald reminds students the deadline to apply for a Robert D. Blue Scholarship is drawing near. Applications must be submitted online at www.rdblue.org by May 10 in order to be eligible for this year's award. "Over the years we've helped thousands of Iowa students meet their college costs with this scholarship," Fitzgerald stated.

NCCC Oak 2 talking about energy conservation in Illinois

    By: Gabriel Huang AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) is in Champaign County working with the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission(CCRPC) from March 13 until April 27. NCCC team Oak 2 is currently canvassing Champaign County to spread the word about energy conservation.  The NCCC team is going door to door in Champaign County to speak with residents about weatherization, energy efficient light bulbs, and LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program).

4th Street Diner News

   4th STREET DINER NEWS On Monday, March 5th, the afternoon activity was a Pepper Card. There were 4 tables of players.  Clete Friedman won 1st place with 304 points.  Don Selken won 2nd place with 299 points.  Annie Hopkins won 3rd place with 275 points.  After cards, refreshments were served by the card club and HACAP provided the beverages.

Whitsons to celebrate 40th anniversary

  David and Diana Whitson will be celebrating their 40th Wedding Anniversary April 8th. If you would like to send them a card they may be be sent to 1205 E 4th St. Vinton.

Boeckmann-Close Engagement

Tom and Lisa Boeckmann of Vinton are happy to announce the engagement of their daughter, Haley to Phillip Close.  Phillip is the son of Dean and Valerie Close of Brandon.  Haley will graduate from UNI in May 2012, and Phillip will graduate from Hawkeye Community College in December 2012.  A wedding is being planned for June 2, 2012 in Vinton.

Handgun safety classes offered in Vinton, CR

    A four hour course for Iowans to obtain their Permit to Carry Weapons has been scheduled in the area.  The course is only four hours in length and covers handgun safety, gun handling, carry options and Iowa and Federal laws.  There is no exam or range qualification.  Upon completion of the four hour course, attendees will be eligible to apply for their Iowa and Arizona (non-resident) permits which will allow them to legally carry in 37 states.

Handgun safety course offered; registration deadline April 6

  A Handgun Safety Course will be conducted on April 21st at the Izaak Walton League Chapter House north of Vinton on Highway #150.  This course is the NRA Basic Handgun Safety Course and is a eight hour class.   It allows the student to handle different types of handguns in a safe environment.  Demonstration of safe skills in handling a variety of handguns and completing a written test is required.

NCCC Oak 1 helps create prairie at Nahant March near Davenport

Joe Reilly of Oak 1, ready to go to work.    By: Kymberly Copple, Oak 1   AmeriCorps NCCC’s Oak 1 spent three days in Davenport, Iowa helping the staff of Nahant Marsh to clear away unwanted brush and debris to restore prairie land. The NCCC team spent 288 hours cutting down small bushes and trees.   NCCC members used chainsaws, loppers and rakes along with driving a Gator to clear and haul loose branches and leaves to the compost site, which was less than 5 minutes away.
